A more technical explanation of Belly Dance:
Belly dancing is identified by swaying hips, undulating torso, specific isolations employed in a range of dynamic expressions. In this dance the focus is on isolating movements of individual parts of the body, with little notice given to the footsteps. Arms and hands move fluidly with unusual strength and control used in stomach.
Accents using “pops and locks” were a dancer either shimmies or makes a striking motion in her shoulders or hips. It is common for feats of flexibility, rolling one’s stomach muscles, and balancing various props such as swords or veil dancing.
